Climate change affects the ecosystems of Estonian lakes, which are important for both biodiversity and the well being of local communities. Lakes provide various ecosystem services, including habitats, maintenance of water quality, fish resources, and recreational opportunities. Previous studies have shown that even relatively small changes in climate can influence the physical, chemical, and biological processes of lakes, causing eutrophication, oxygen depletion, and a decline in biodiversity. The aim of this bachelor’s thesis was to analyse the impact of climate change on the ecosystems of Estonian lakes and on the ecosystem services they provide. The thesis was based on scientific articles and expert assessments, and it examined the effects of key climate factors, such as temperature, precipitation, and wind, on lake water temperature, ice regime, oxygen conditions, trophic status, and biota. The results showed that rising water temperature, changes in precipitation, and a shorter duration of ice cover may worsen the ecological status of lakes. These changes promote eutrophication, deterioration of water quality, algal blooms, and the decline of cold-water species. As a result, the ecosystem services provided by lakes may weaken, including fish resources, the natural water purification capacity, and recreational opportunities. To mitigate the negative impacts, it is important to implement adaptation measures, reduce nutrient input, and strengthen the monitoring of lake conditions.
