To meet the growing demand for eggs and chicken meat, effective breeding practices are essential to achieve higher production. Understanding embryonic development can aid in making informed breeding choices and identifying embryo malformations. The purpose of this bachelor's thesis is to describe embryonic development and provide an overview of chicken embryo development through egg candling. The first part of the thesis outlines the structure, storage, and incubation conditions of eggs, along with the embryonic development of chicks. Embryonic development is detailed day by day, describing the stages of gastrulation, neurulation, organogenesis, and other structural formations. The development of embryos from three different breeds (Buff Leghorn, Cream Legbar, and Marans) was monitored during incubation by egg candling. Development was most detectable in Cream Legbar eggs and least detectable in Marans eggs, primarily due to the dark brown color of Marans eggs. Embryo movement was visible in both Leghorn and Cream Legbar eggs. Unhatched eggs were opened and analyzed to determine possible causes of embryonic death. The author encourages aviculturists to open unhatched eggs after incubation to identify reasons for embryo mortality. This practice can help in selecting the best birds for breeding and increasing hatchability rates.
