orgaanilise aine stabiliseerumine efektiivsem. Liblikõielised vahekultuurid ja segukülvid
näitasid üldiselt kõrgemat Cef väärtust võrreldes kõrrelistega, viidates erinevate
funktsionaalsete rühmade olulisele rollile C stabiliseerumisel mullas. Seetõttu sõltub
vahekultuuride potentsiaal mulla C sidumisel suuresti mulla omadustest ja orgaanilise aine
stabiliseerumise mehhanismidest.
Soil organic matter (SOM) plays an important role in maintaining soil fertility, carbon sequestration, and the sustainability of agricultural systems. Cover crops are considered one of the most important approaches for increasing soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks and improving soil quality; however, their effects depend on both soil properties and the species composition of cover crops. The aim of this bachelor’s thesis was to evaluate the effects of cover crops on soil SOC stocks, SOM fractional composition, and carbon sequestration efficiency (Cef). The study was conducted as a meta-analysis based on five scientific articles investigating the effects of cover crops on soil SOC stocks as well as on labile and stable SOM fractions. The results showed that cover crops generally increased SOC stocks compared to controls without cover crops, although the effect depended on soil properties and the species composition of the cover crops. In soils with lower clay content, the proportion of labile organic matter increased more frequently, which may indicate limited carbon (C) stabilization capacity and possible SOC saturation, whereas in soils with higher clay content, organic matter stabilization was more efficient. Leguminous cover crops and cover crop mixtures generally showed higher Cef compared to grasses, indicating the important role of different functional groups in SOC stabilization. Therefore, the potential of cover crops for soil C sequestration largely depends on soil properties and the mechanisms of organic matter stabilization.
