Cluster crises, the increase in the tax burden and the general rise in prices make it more and more difficult for sports clubs to operate sustainably. The aim of the master's thesis was to find out the bottlenecks in the financing and sustainability of the activities of Estonian football clubs. To fulfill the objective, data was collected through 14 semi-structured interviews conducted between February and March 2024. The results of the research revealed that the main bottleneck for the sustainability of the financing and activities of Estonian football clubs is that the budget of most football clubs mainly consists of various donations, subsidies and sponsorship income, and the income from the sports clubs' own activities has a smaller share in the budget. Thus, football clubs are highly dependent on various donations and grants, and the clubs do not earn enough from their activities. The funding and activities of youth sports can be assessed as economically sustainable, but there are no prerequisites for the operation of adult team sports in Estonia. Football clubs in Estonia lack the main sources of income of successful foreign countries. In order to sustainably stay in international competition with a sporting level, it is necessary to make investments. According to the statutes of the Estonian Football Association, football clubs must be non-profit organizations, but there are studies that, operating in this form, clubs cannot be sustainably competitive at the international level. Based on the theory of resource dependence and coopetition, football clubs should cooperate more in order to comprehensively develop their area and benefit each other economically and athletically. The author of the paper recommends that football clubs contribute to improving the quality of youth work and the knowledge of coaches, which will result in the cultivation of better football players. Higher quality players and sporting success create the prerequisites for higher prize money, revenue from the sale of player rights, ticket revenue, sales of fan products and sponsorship revenue. The previously described would create additional sources of income for clubs from their own activities, as a result of which they would be more economically sustainable and less dependent on third parties. The results of the master's thesis can be used by football club managers and the Estonian Football Association.
