Koduskompostimist aitaks kindlasti hoogustada inimeste teadlikkuse tõus, tehes vastavaid
The research intention is to figure out how much people of Võru city are handling their organic waste on sight and what kind of methods are in use. This was figured out by observation in Võru city. 1015 households were observed and the study shows that the percentage of people who compost at home in Võru is very small (11 %). Compost heaps and homemade compost bins were the most popular choices for composting. The result of the observation was surprisingly small because they estimated that in little town like Võru they are handling their organic waste much more than the study showed. It can be assumed that the reason for such low proportion of domestic waste getting composted is mainly due to people’s low awareness of the different ways to compost and not knowing the benefits it has to the environment. Raising people’s awareness would certainly help boost composting at home. This could be achieved through campaigns (information leaflets, courses, briefings) and cooperation with waste management companies, for example by reducing the price of their services on the condition that there is a composter in use and also through composter campaigns. The higher the percentage of the population who compost their own waste, the smaller the amount of waste disposed in landfills. Taking into account the high consumption in developed countries and the consequent damage to the environment, it is clear that we need to sort our waste so that the environmental impact would be reduced to a minimum.
