    An Ecosystem Services Based Approach to Characterising Riparian Forests and Developing Management Solutions

    Riparian forests along river corridors play a important role in sustaining ecosystem services, including water quality regulation, bank stabilization, carbon storage, biodiversity support, and cultural values. Despite their importance, riparian forests are frequently managed using generalized forest typologies that insufficiently reflect their functional roles, spatial heterogeneity, and strong coupling with hydrological processes. The proposed approach is based on the premise that characterising riparian forests solely by site type or stand structure is insufficient for informed decision-making. Instead, riparian forests are described in terms of their capacity to provide ecosystem services, their sensitivity to disturbance, and their relevance for management interventions. Characterisation is structured along key environmental gradients shaping ecosystem service provision, including hydrological connectivity (flood frequency, groundwater interaction), geomorphological position (river bank, floodplain, terrace), vegetation structure and composition, and land-use legacies. Together, these factors determine the ability of riparian forests to regulate nutrient and sediment fluxes, mitigate flood impacts, maintain habitat continuity, and contribute to climate regulation. Building on this characterisation, a multi-dimensional framework is introduced that links biophysical attributes to ecosystem service bundles rather than single functions. This enables the identification of riparian forest types that are particularly important for regulating services (e.g. nutrient retention and erosion control), supporting services (e.g. habitat provision and ecological connectivity), or cultural services (e.g. recreation and landscape values). The framework is designed to inform management by highlighting how different riparian forest types require distinct management solutions, ranging from strict protection and passive restoration to adaptive silviculture that maintains structural complexity while sustaining ecosystem service delivery. The approach is intended to be operational across spatial scales, from individual river reaches to catchment-level planning, and compatible with existing forest inventory, spatial, and hydrological data. By explicitly linking ecosystem service–based characterisation with management options, the framework supports transparent evaluation of trade-offs and synergies among management objectives and helps prioritise areas where riparian forest conservation or restoration delivers the greatest societal benefits.

    Spread, impact, and origin of Diplodia sapinea in the world and in Estonia

    Emerging and invasive pathogens pose a growing threat to tree nurseries and forests, a risk that is intensified by rapid climate change. The focus of my PhD thesis is Diplodia sapinea, the causal agent of Diplodia tip blight, which recently, since the beginning of the 21st century, has become an emerging pathogen in Northern Europe. The fungus’ universal lifestyle encompasses endophytic, saprotrophic, and pathogenic stages. the fungus can infect roots, stem, wood, shoots, needles, cones, and seeds regardless of host age, making the fungus exceptionally versatile in general and dangerous during epidemics. Therefore, one of the aims of my PhD thesis is to analyze the relationships between spore dissemination and weather factors like temperature, rainfall, air humidity, and wind. This information will be beneficial for nurseries to apply prophylactic fungicides more efficiently, and together with systematic preliminary surveys allows for evaluating the potential risk of disease spread. Another key factor in protecting pines in nurseries and forest stands is to focus on the genetics of host and the pathogen. Thus, my PhD thesis aims to perform a population genetic analysis using various D. sapinea populations from across the world, including not yet analyzed population from Asia. This will help determine the potential origin and pathways of spread of D. sapinea, as well as identify pathogen genotypes with higher virulence. I believe this course will be very beneficial in laying a solid foundation for this topic of my thesis. In addition, my PhD thesis aims to analyze the occurrence and extent of damage by D. sapinea in young pine stands using long-term survey data across Estonia as well as analyze the pines genotypic resistance against the fungus based on survey data collected since 2021 from progeny trial areas in Estonia.

    Inoculation success of Inonotus obliquus in birch and alder sites in Estonia

    Inonotus obliquus (Ach. ex Pers.) Pilát (commonly known as Chaga) is a medicinal fungus traditionally harvested from birch trees. Artificial cultivation is increasingly considered due to a rising commercial demand. However, our knowledge remains limited regarding infection dynamics and conk development on different host species. We assessed the success of I. obliquus inoculation in Betula pendula, B. pubescens, Alnus incana, and A. glutinosa stands two years after inoculation in order to: (i) identify the most susceptible host tree species and the most effective I. obliquus strains for cultivation; (ii) assess the frequency of conk formation under hemiboreal conditions; (iii) investigate whether visible symptoms on stems resulted from I. obliquus infection; and (iv) determine whether mechanical wounding influenced fungal establishment. The experiment was conducted at two locations in Estonia, encompassing a total of six forest sites, with inoculation success assessed using species-specific qPCR. Sterile conk development was additionally monitored visually four years post-inoculation. Inoculation success differed between the two locations, with an infection rate of 18% observed at Järvselja and 3% at Võrumaa. Three fungal strains consistently achieved higher infection rates among the six tested ones. Conks developed only on A. glutinosa trees and with specific strains. Only the identity of the fungal strains resulted in a significant effect on infection success. Visible stem symptoms, such as bleeding and bulging, were unreliable indicators of the infection rate. Inonotus obliquus conks developed more rapidly on A. glutinosa compared to B. pendula, B. pubescens, and A. incana. Moreover, fungal strains play a crucial role in determining cultivation success.

    The European agricultural sector is undergoing structural changes, marked by a decrease in farm numbers and an increase in the size of remaining farms Over two decades, Estonia saw an 80% reduction in agricultural households (AH), while average land use (LU) per AH grew. This expansion of large farms has negatively impacted small farms, posing a threat to rural life, food safety, and national security, all of which rely on a high number of small farms and landowners.

     Great attention has been paid to liquid biofuels produced from lignocellulosic biomass.  The production of liquid biofuels still has environmental, economic and energetic limitations: a) Large volume of sidestreams are produced c) High costs of pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis b) High energy inputs are required to produce the fuel  There is a continuous search for solutions to add value to the bioethanol production chain.  Anaerobic digestion has been proposed as a handling option for waste recovery from biodegradable waste and bioethanol sidestreams.

    Study on performance of compression engine operated by biodiesel fuel

    The performance analysis of the biofuel energy efficiency in the combustion engine is as function of the fuel’s composition and other physical-chemical parameters. Different models and analysis do not take into account the effect that the use of different bio-diesel fuels has on the operation of the engine. Refinement is needed in describing the physical processes taking place in the engine’s cylinders. The aim of the study is the development of a mathematical model for the practical analysis of the efficiency of use of biofuel on diesel engines, which would take into account the fuel’s composition. The developed model in the article is designed to develop the 4Ч11.0/12.5 diesel engine.

    The impact of herd health on the efficiency of dairy farms : [presentation]

    Maximization of profit is one of the main interests of any farmer. Profit depends on managerial decisions and many economic factors, but also on the health of the herd. Thus, it is important to study how different factors related to herd health impact farms’ economic performance. The objective of this paper is to determine how herd health influences farm technical efficiency by comparing Estonian farm data from two periods, the years 2012 and 2017. Typically, the major herd health issues are related to udder problems, followed by reproduction issues and limb disorders. We used the FADN (Farm Accounting Data Network) database and data from Estonian Livestock Performance Recording Ltd. The two-stage mathematical approach was chosen as the research method. In the first stage the DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) was used to estimate farms’ technical efficiency. The output-oriented VRS (Variable Returns to Scale) approach was applied to the data of 64 farms. In the second stage, we used the FRM (Fractional Regression Model) to define which the technical efficiency drivers were among herd health and economic factors. The study revealed that major changes have occurred between the two periods analysed. The main herd health factors influencing farms’ technical efficiency are the somatic cell count (SCC) and age at first calving.
