Keith (toimetaja); Trei, Piret (toimetaja)The nature which surrounds us plays a central role in our existence. This is difficult to comprehend, as usually we place ourselves at the center of human existence. If we think of humans as a part of nature, then the environment will be equally important and central (the Estonian word “keskkond” for environment refers to the “center of being”). Ecology has typically focused on pristine systems free from human interference. However, as human influence has become ever more pervasive, there is a growing need for theory to address less than pristine systems. A major question then for ecologists and land managers is the degree of naturalness of a system. Although in the past forestry focused on production of a few commodities, the threat of global environmental change demands that we adopt a new paradigm of forest management that combines past knowledge with innovative management planning strategies that consider a full range of projected ecosystem responses, and resilience to unanticipated factors. It is our great pleasure to host the conference Forest landscape mosaics: disturbance, restoration and management at times of global change, August 11–14, 2014. This meeting brings together scientists, practitioners, policymakers and other experts to share experiences with disturbance management, and evaluate past, present and future application and implementation of research findings from the scientific community. The initiative comes from two working groups of EFINORD/SNS: the network of Natural Disturbance Dynamics Analysis for Forest Ecosystem Management (FORDISMAN) and the Nordic Working Group on the Ecology of Primeval Boreal Forests (PRIFOR). Two major organizations, IUFRO (International Union of Forest Research Organizations) and IAVS (International Association for Vegetation Science) create the main stage for the event. Sponsors supporting the meeting are gratefully acknowledged. The meeting venue is Tartu, second largest city in Estonia and the center of university and science life in this country. The academic atmosphere of this town supports the constructive discussions and research environment needed for people to better understand the relations between humans and nature. The Estonian hemiboreal forest is a unique example of co-existence of people and trees: balanced management and conservation is our planned future. We expect that good colleagues from all around the World will enjoy an interesting program, exciting excursions and social events. Aim of this study is: 1) Understand the legal aspect of biofuel usage, 2) Ways EU member states implemented this policies in their national legislations.Kirje The impact of herd health on the efficiency of dairy farms : [presentation](Estonian University of Life Sciences, 2020) Põldaru, Reet; Luik-Lindsaar, HelisMaximization of profit is one of the main interests of any farmer. Profit depends on managerial decisions and many economic factors, but also on the health of the herd. Thus, it is important to study how different factors related to herd health impact farms’ economic performance. The objective of this paper is to determine how herd health influences farm technical efficiency by comparing Estonian farm data from two periods, the years 2012 and 2017. Typically, the major herd health issues are related to udder problems, followed by reproduction issues and limb disorders. We used the FADN (Farm Accounting Data Network) database and data from Estonian Livestock Performance Recording Ltd. The two-stage mathematical approach was chosen as the research method. In the first stage the DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) was used to estimate farms’ technical efficiency. The output-oriented VRS (Variable Returns to Scale) approach was applied to the data of 64 farms. In the second stage, we used the FRM (Fractional Regression Model) to define which the technical efficiency drivers were among herd health and economic factors. The study revealed that major changes have occurred between the two periods analysed. The main herd health factors influencing farms’ technical efficiency are the somatic cell count (SCC) and age at first calving.Kirje Wildflowers availability not a land-use type affects commercial bumblebee foraging on the strawberry : [presentation](Estonian University of Life Sciences, 2020) Bontsutsnaja, Anna; Pisman, Matti; Karise, Reet; Mänd, Marika; Smagghe, GuyManaged bumble bees can be used to increase crop yield quality and quantity in areas where wild pollinators are insufficient. The success of introduced pollinators is highly dependent on the surrounding environment, competition with other pollinators, food source relevance, and foraging behavior.Kirje Study on performance of compression engine operated by biodiesel fuel(Estonian University of Life Sciences, 2020) Kaletnik, H.; Mazur, V.; Gunko, I.; Ryaboshapka, V.; Bulgakov, V.; Raide, Veljo; Ilves, Risto; Olt, JüriThe performance analysis of the biofuel energy efficiency in the combustion engine is as function of the fuel’s composition and other physical-chemical parameters. Different models and analysis do not take into account the effect that the use of different bio-diesel fuels has on the operation of the engine. Refinement is needed in describing the physical processes taking place in the engine’s cylinders. The aim of the study is the development of a mathematical model for the practical analysis of the efficiency of use of biofuel on diesel engines, which would take into account the fuel’s composition. The developed model in the article is designed to develop the 4Ч11.0/12.5 diesel engine.Kirje Second-generation bioethanol production : strategies for sidestreams valorisation in a sustainable circular economy : [presentation](Estonian University of Life Sciences, 2020) Rocha-Meneses, Lisandra; Orupõld, Kaja; Kikas, Timo Great attention has been paid to liquid biofuels produced from lignocellulosic biomass. The production of liquid biofuels still has environmental, economic and energetic limitations: a) Large volume of sidestreams are produced c) High costs of pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis b) High energy inputs are required to produce the fuel There is a continuous search for solutions to add value to the bioethanol production chain. Anaerobic digestion has been proposed as a handling option for waste recovery from biodegradable waste and bioethanol sidestreams.
