Kirje Serum Amyloid A Changes in Mares Following Ovum Pick-Up(Eesti Maaülikool, 2025) Autio, Merja Helena; Reilent, Andres (advisor); Kavak, Ants (advisor); Chair of Veterinary Biomedicine and Food HygieneSerum amyloid A is a sensitive acute-phase protein in horses that is useful for detecting inflammation and tissue injuries. In assisted reproductive technologies, particularly ovum pick-up, understanding the inflammatory response is important for evaluating the procedural safety and effects on animal welfare. While ovum pick-up is minimally invasive, its potential to induce systemic inflammation remains understudied in horses. This study analysed serum amyloid A in mares following an ovum pick-up procedure to determine the inflammatory response to the procedure. Serum amyloid A was measured from 10 mares before (0 h) and after ovum pick-up procedure (24 h, 48 h, and 72 h). Altogether 19 ovum pick-ups were conducted. Median serum amyloid A levels increased minimally, reaching a peak at 24 h (0,58 mg/L) with a maximum 2,85-fold rise from baseline (0,20 mg/L), before declining to near baseline levels by 72 h (0,31 mg/L). No significant correlation was found between the serum amyloid A levels and mare age, haemolysis or repeated ovum pick-up procedures. The observed serum amyloid A levels were within the range of healthy horses, as described in previous studies. These findings suggest that ovum pick-up induces minimal and transient systemic reaction in horses, which supports its safety as procedure. However, the small sample size (10 mares, 19 procedures) limits generalisation and further research is needed.
