Each column corresponds to a single bumble bee, and each sheet represents a different treatment group.Kirje Effects of synthetic and biological pesticide exposure on honey bees and bumble bees(Eesti Maaülikool, 2019) Raimets, Risto; Mänd, Marika (advisor); Karise, Reet (advisor); vanEngelsdorp, Dennis (opponent)The current thesis investigated whether different pesticide residues, and at which concentrations, can be found in different honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) colony components collected from different land use types (I, II). Also, effects of different pesticides and their mixtures on honey bees and bumble bees (Bombus terrestris L.) were investigated (III, IV, V). Results showed that different pesticide residues were found from different honey bee colony components (I, II). Although residues found were generally not correlated with landscape parameters or plant species visited, some positive correlations were observed between the proportion of oilseed rape in the landscape and residues detected (I). In addition, honey samples analysed were relatively free of pesticides; only some herbicide residues were found (II). Field realistic concentrations of the fungicide tebuconazole and the insecticide tau-fluvalinate had significant impacts on developing honey bee queens. Tebuconazole decreased queen cell acceptance and tau-fluvalinate increased queen weight significantly. Interestingly, no synergistic effects were observed, but rather an antagonism between the two pesticides was observed (III). The fungicide imazalil synergised the effect of three out of four insecticides tested on bumble bees, increasing mortality significantly. These included fipronil, thiamethoxam and cypermethrin. Despite the high concentrations used, imidacloprid’s lethal effect was not synergised by imazalil, and no mortality was observed (IV). In general, different microbiological preparations had similar effects on honey bee and bumble bee longevity and physiological parameters (V). Most of the used powders had similar effect on both bee species, however PrestopMix decreased only honey bee longevity significantly. There exist major behavioural and physiological differences between the two bee species studied here, as well as there are major differences between various pesticides. It must be taken into account that the effects of pesticides cannot simply be extrapolated from one species to another, nor can we extrapolated the effects of one pesticide to another, even within a specific class (e.g. neonicotinoids).Kirje Mesilasperede hukkumise põhjused Eestis aastatel 2011-2012(2013) Raimets, Risto; Paal, Taimi (juhendaja); Randveer, Tiit (juhendaja)Antud bakalaureusetöö eesmärgiks on välja selgitada mesilasperede huku arvatavad põhjustajad Eestis aastatel 2011-2012. Peamiselt keskendub see töö erinevatele haigustele ja kahjuritele, mis põhjustavad mesilasperede hukkumist. Antud töö läbiviimiseks koostati ankeet, mis saadeti mesinikele Eestimaa erinevais paigus. Saadud tulemusi võrreldi varem tehtud uuringutega. Küsitluses osalenud mesinike analüüsist võib järeldada, et erinevate põhjuste tõttu hukkus 2011. aastal 69 ja 2012. aastal 84 mesilasperet. 2011. aastal hukkus enim mesilasperesid varroalesta ja mesilaste kadumisega tarust. 2012. aastal hukkus enim mesilasperesi nälja, nugise, varroalesta ja muude põhjuste tõttu. Võrdluses varem koostatud samalaadse uurimusega selgus, et varroatoos on probleemsem Harjumaal ja Lääne-Virumaal. Võrdlusest selgus ka, et mesilasperede kadumine tarust on endiselt murettekitav. Põllumajanduse intensiivistumine toob kaasa ka laialdase pestitsiidide kasutamise, mida peetakse üheks tolmeldajate arvukuse vähenemise põhjuseks. Antud uurimistöö eesmärgiks oli välja selgitada kuidas mõjutavad insektitsiid tau-fluvalinaat ja fungitsiid tebukonasool, ning nende kahe aine segu kimalaste füsioloogilisi näitajaid ja suremust, kui nad tarbivad saastunud toitu pikema perioodi jooksul. Füsioloogiliste katsete puhul kasutati läbivoolurespiromeetrit, mille abil mõõdeti pestitsiidide väikeste dooside mõju kimalaste ainevahetusele ja veekaole. Suremuse katse puhul jälgiti pestitsiididega töödeldud söödasegusid tarbinud kimalaste suremust päevade lõikes. Uurimistöö tulemustest selgub, et ka väikesed pestitsiidide doosid mõjutavad kimalaste füsioloogiat ja suremust. Tau-fluvalinaat üksiku ainena põhjustas kimalastes olulist veekao langust. Lisaks suurendas mainitud insektitsiid oluliselt kimalaste suremust 18 °C juures. Tebukonasool üksi ei mõjutanud ei füsioloogilisi näitajaid ega ka suremust. Tuleb ka märkida, et 28 °C juures puudus tau-fluvalinaadil üksiku ainena oluline mõju kimalaste suremusele. In this study, we experimentally reared bumble bee (Bombus terrestris) larvae on pollen diets differing in protein-to-lipid (P:L) ratios and exposed them to the insecticide sulfoxaflor via their food to test how these factors jointly affect survival, development, and adult traits. Larvae fed multifloral pollen exhibited higher survival and more consistent growth than monofloral (oilseed rape, faba bean) diets. Under the oliseed rape, sulfoxaflor reduced mortality and increased adult emergence despite poorer baseline performance in controls. In contrast, under the multifloral diet, sulfoxaflor prolonged development, reduced larval growth, and lowered adult body mass. Under faba bean, responses varied across traits, with prolonged development at lower exposure and reduced growth at higher exposure. Despite these developmental effects, sulfoxaflor did not significantly affect adult respiration rate, and respiration patterns showed no significant treatment effects, although diet-dependent trends were observed. These findings demonstrate that sulfoxaflor effects are strongly context-dependent and mediated by nutritional conditions. They indicate that sulfoxaflor shifts diet-dependent trade-offs between survival and development, improving survival on nutritionally limiting diets while imposing developmental delays and growth costs when nutrition is otherwise favourable.Kirje Valik Eesti õietolmu värve : taskuabiline mesinikele(Eesti Maaülikool, 2025) Väli, Vivika; Jürison, Margret; Raimets, Risto; Karise, ReetMesilased koguvad õietolmu paljudelt taimeliikidelt, kuid enamasti külastavad nad iga kogumisretke jooksul ühte liiki. Seetõttu esindab iga suirakorvi kogutud õietolmutomp peamiselt ühte taimeliiki ning homogeense värviga õietolmutompude kogumi botaaniline päritolu on määratletav selle värvuse järgi. Käesolev taskuabiline mesilaste kogutud õietolmutompude värvidest on koostatud selleks, et toetada mesinikke ja loodushuvilisi õietolmu päritolu visuaalsel määramisel. Eesmärgiks on pakkuda kiiret ja praktilist ülevaadet taimeliikidest, millelt mesilased õietolmu koguvad, tuginedes tompude iseloomulikule värvitoonile ja vastava liigi õitsemisajale.
