Kirje Assessment of Adoption Decision for Irrigation Among Smallholder Farmers in Nigeria(Eesti Maaülikool, 2024) Ogunmola, Omotoso Oluseye; Aleksandrova, Olha (advisor)Adopting irrigation technology by smallholder farmers continues to be a significant challenge, limiting agricultural productivity in Nigeria. Despite the significant contribution of irrigation to agricultural production, smallholder farmers in Nigeria have yet to embrace it. Therefore, I carried out a cross-sectional household and farm survey of 300 randomly selected smallholder farmers to determine the factors influencing the adoption decision and intensity of irrigation technology. Descriptive statistics was used to summarize the data; budgetary analysis was used to estimate the farmer's cost and returns, and the Double-Hurdle regression model to assess the determinants of adoption decision and intensity of irrigation technology. Eight irrigation technologies were identified, and they had different adoption rates among the farmers. Most farmers had adopted drip irrigation (24.67%) and sprinkler irrigation (20%) in Kaduna state,. The center pivot had the least adoption intensity used for farm production. An average farmer realized ₦1,847,258.59 and ₦1,353,982.93 per hectare as profit from production under irrigation and rainfed and can potentially earn ₦1.97 and ₦1.71 on every Naira invested, respectively. However, farm production under an irrigation system had significantly higher returns than in a rainfed farming system. The Double-Hurdle model result shows that smallholder farmers who are educated, visited by extension agents, and have higher incomes are more likely to adopt irrigation technologies. Also, farming experience and distance from the farm to the market negatively influence farmers’ decision to adopt irrigation technologies. Farm income influenced the adoption intensity of irrigation technologies among smallholder farmers. The study recommends policies and developmental programs for financial support and extension services tailored to the needs of farmers with varying income levels. Such interventions could help bridge the gap between initial adoption and extensive use of irrigation technology, fostering sustained agricultural development and economic growth in smallholder farming communities.Kirje Evaluating The Perceived Effects Of Climate Change On Rice Production Amongst Small-Scale Farmers In Ebonyi State, Nigeria(Eesti Maaülikool, 2024) Uchime, Chinedu; Aleksandrova, Olha (advisor)With the effects of climate change, food security and agricultural productivity are under threat, especially in regions reliant on staple crops like rice. This study aims to investigate the perceived impact of climate change on small-scale rice farming in Ebonyi State, Nigeria, a region central to Nigeria's rice production goals. Therefore, this study used a multivariate probit model and intensive field surveys to understand farmers' perceptions of climate change effects, sources of information, and adaptation strategies. The results were complex because farmers showed varied perceptions regarding the impacts of increasing rainfall intensity, prolonged dry seasons, and temperature fluctuations. The study also underlines socio-economic factors such as age, farm size, and membership in farmer organizations as critical determinants of farmers' perceptions concerning the effects of climate change. Furthermore, it identifies the adaption measures utilized by farmers, including mulching, limited tillage, and soil conservation approaches. Recommendations include prioritizing targeted awareness programs, government subsidies, increased access to finance facilities, and resilient crop varieties to enhance climate resilience among small-scale rice producers. In summary, this study enhances our comprehension of how agricultural communities adapt to climate change and provides valuable information for policymakers and practitioners to strengthen food security in response to climatic variability.
