Kirje Prospective comparison of two wound dressings on distal limbs in horses(Eesti Maaülikool, 2025) Alonen, Elisabeth; Corrêa, Felipe (advisor); Chair of Clinical Veterinary MedicineWounds on the distal limbs of horses are common and present unique challenges in equine medicine due to poor vascularization, high contamination risk, and difficulty in suturing. These wounds often result in prolonged healing, delayed wound contraction, and the formation of exuberant granulation tissue due to infection, which complicates recovery and impacts the horse’s quality of life and athletic prospects. The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness and safety of Ravimus VET wound dressing to standard treatment Suprasorb® X in the equine clinic of Estonian University of Life Sciences. In this prospective study, two different antimicrobial wound dressings were evaluated and compared in treatment of infected wounds on horse’s lower limbs. Ravimus wound dressing contains nanofibers with copper and silver nanoparticles, which help to prevent bacterial growth and Suprasorb® X contains antimicrobial agent polyhexamethylene biguanide. In total, 8 wounds 2 cm x 2cm were created and 4 wounds were treated with Ravimus VET wound dressing and 4 with Suprasorb® X. In addition to wound evaluation, microbiological and histological samples were obtained to evaluate infections in the wound. There were no significant differences in wound healing time between the two dressings. Also, there was no difference in grade of infection between the dressings. Ravimus VET wound dressing did not have any side effects and is as safe to use as standard treatment Suprasorb® X. Further studies are needed, because of low number of cases in this study.
