Muhu island is an attractive area for active and passive vacation, offering many options that are used by locals and also tourists. Although the potential, there are no hiking or cycling trails on Muhu and there is low personal initiative. This thesis is examining how to design hiking and cycling trails on Muhu island to make local environment more versatile and more used by active vacationers. For that, theoretic material is studied and compared it in practice: First, overall situation of hiking and cycling trails is examined and then Muhu is studied in the same way. Second, the reasons of using these trails are searched and following the same keywords, similar landscape architecture projects are looked at, to widen the context and use some key points in the project later on. Third, the design principles for hiking and cycling trails were investigated, taking into consideration the context and potential of Muhu island. All these principles were tested in a pilot design project in North-West of Muhu. It become evident that by planning holistically and foresightedly, sustainable hiking and cycling trails are possible to design and develop futher on as a network on Muhu island. The trails offer various possibilities to different interest groups, appreciating local strenghts of the places and are accessible both in physical and virtual way to potential users of the places. This thesis is a base for planning hiking and cycling trail networks in seaside regions and gives inputs how to design a trail in a certain context.Muhu island is an attractive area for active and passive vacation, offering many options that are used by locals and also tourists.
