Nodal points“ is a project made as a bachelor thesis in landscape architecture in Estonian University of Life Sciences. The aim was to come up with a design solution for one linear area in Tartu, which is the old railway line near Karlova and Ropka district surrounded by residential as well as business areas, public spaces and waterfronts. In the given scenario the city council needed to find areas for planning apartment or business buildings as a future selling argument for Tartu near the area. Plus, the proposal areas had to be linked to old railway line by changing it into a linear park for the neighbourhood as well as a light traffic connection for Tartu. This situation is in need for flexible planning and design decisions, because future plans rely on economic stability. The main problems to cope with in this area were: very different urban structure through the area, different densities of the urban surroundings, defining the users of the area and connecting it all into one shared linear space. Through analyses it was clear that there had to be something in the design solution that connects all the seperated areas together. The name of the work „Nodal points“ refers to an idea of connecting areas in the intersections, making the whole area as one unity. As a result, people who are invited into the area, due to attractive design solutions in the intersections of different roads and paths, are going to enter and use different new development areas and linear park. Methodology of connecting the areas included first the nodal points itself, meaning that there were made some new intersections that could lead into and through the linear park (starting points are city centre and some parks nearby). These places were designed to attract people to use the linear park. As an example, one design solution was to build platforms. They help cross the old railway in its most large difference in hight of the slope, plus they can be used as a sitting and resting place. Another, most detailed plan of the project is intersection of Võru street and old railway. The solution there was to lift the old road into upper level and make crossing space for light traffic users on both, old railway level and the new Võru street level. As a result, the movement of light traffic users is accelerated and the whole linear park works even if there are car roads crossing the linear park vertically. And the second aim was to work on the linear park itself. It was chosen to change it into light traffic park with all its best amenities for different kinds of users, especially for those who are doing sports. Through this, the bycycle roads are connected even with city centre, because Karlova has great roads for bycicle users already. As a result, if the circulation of light traffic is faster, then the more aliveness it will bring to new linear park as well as to new business or residential apartments. The apartment planning was made in one area, showing that it is the possible short-term perspective development of the future. Other possible places are shown on analyses scheme. And last but not least was the special selection of plants on the area to attract attention in the intersections and through the whole area, for example with big allee which colours into bright red in the autumn.2014. aasta bakalaureuse astme lõputööks ette antud ala on kasutusest välja jäänud raudteekoridor Karlova ja Ropka linnaosade vahel.
